Katie Spencer‘s visit to TwickFolk rounds off our concert year in impeccable style.
Guitarists like John Martyn and Michael Chapman come to mind, Beth Orton’s voice and touches of Joni Mitchell. Katie’s first album was called Weather Beaten, which is an apt description of the music but doesn’t convey the warmth of the words and their delivery.
Katie was raised in Yorkshire, and the landscape near Hull is evoked not just in her album covers, but in the lush simplicity of her music. Delicate and un-rushed, the ten songs on last year’s The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon, yet intimacy and introspection still remain.
‘Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song.’ – Ralph McTell
