Martin Woodford’s one-man show visits the heroic actions of women from the Hull fishing community. Using songs, video interviews and the words of the people involved, Martin tells the story of how action by the Hull women changed the laws around fishing more in two weeks than governments had managed in 100 years.

The show features video interviews with Mike Waterson, the legendary Hull singer-songwriter and member of the Watersons, supplied by Doc Rowe from the National Folk Archive. Martin performs songs by Mike Waterson, Richard Grainger and Linda Kelly.

Martin is a regular at TwickFolk and a powerful performer of traditional songs. We are delighted he is bringing his unique and thought-provoking show to the Cabbage Patch.

“My dad’s uncle, at 18 years, went down on the Ross Cleveland. Although we knew most of the story about the tragedy, we really enjoyed the night and to hear the songs… thank you for organising and making [the show] happen.”

“Excellent performances and recording… The CD has the feel of those classic Topic records where the integrity of the delivery punches the message home.”
